Windsor-Essex Food Bank Association receives $503,781 in federal
funding to improve food security
Food banks and other local food organizations across Canada are
facing an increased demand for their services, as well as added pressure from
shortages in donations and volunteers. Now more than ever, they need continued
support to offer the crucial services Canadians rely upon to feel safe and healthy.
In April, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the $100 million Emergency Fund for
Food Security to support national, regional, and local organizations across Canada that
are assisting people experiencing food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. This
fund supports the purchase and distribution of food on an emergency basis across the
country.
Today, Irek Kusmierczyk, Member of Parliament for Windsor Tecumseh, announced
that the Windsor-Essex Food Bank Association has received $503,781 from the
Government of Canada’s emergency fund, including $428,725 in direct funding, as well
as $75,056 worth of purchased food.
“Our government is proud to stand beside the UHC to help them help our most
vulnerable community members in this time of need,” said Kusmierczyk. “This
investment will allow them to continue operating drive-thru food hubs throughout the city
and county and will ensure that each and every neighbour in our community can safely
access nutritious food throughout the winter.”
The funding is being delivered through the Local Food Infrastructure Fund, which is part
of Canada’s first-ever national food policy. Launched last year under the leadership of
Minister Bibeau, the policy is a roadmap for a healthier and more sustainable food
system in Canada, ensuring that all Canadians have access to safe, nutritious, and
culturally diverse food.
The UHC also announced the opening of a new food hub at the Adie Knox Herman
Recreation Complex that will serve Windsor’s west-end. Food hampers will be
distributed by no-contact methods from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and distribution will continue at
the location each Tuesday and Thursday.
