Mural Proud to unveil a spectacular mural by DERKZ at Tecumseh Legion Branch 261 honouring the 100th anniversary the Town of Tecumseh and it's first Mayor Col. Paul Poisson and the 100th anniversary of the Poppy Campaign - all together.
Inspired by previous DERKZ murals, and one evening walking past the huge blank canvass of the west facing wall of the Legion Hall on Lesperance Avenue, I shared an idea with Mayor Gary McNamara about commemorating our veterans and the 100th Anniversary of the Poppy Campaign.
Mayor McNamara instantly and full-heartedly embraced the idea and had the broader vision to include the mural as part of the Town's Centennial and to honour Col. Poisson! The Town Council unanimously supported the project. With great support of then Branch 261 President Bernie Kelly and the whole Executive Board - we were on our way!
Finally, we reached out to DERKZ who was thrilled with the challenge and the opportunity to honour our veterans - and when asked if the size of the mural was doable said: "Absolutely - but we're going to need more paint!"
And certainly a huge thank you to Minister Lawrence MacAulay - Veterans Affairs - and Minister Helena Jaczek - FEDDEV - who enthusiastically supported this great project with generous support from the Government of Canada.
Today was a special day. Over a hundred people turned out - including our veterans and descendants of Col. Poisson.
I am proud to partner with an incredible team on a beautiful project that will help make sure that we remember them.
